Sports Internships
Getting a sports internship with your
favorite team could just be the dream job for you
...
I always thought I was pretty happy at my job. Although I
didn't exactly look forward to going to work every day, I
didn't dread it either. I was putting my college degree to use,
making good money, and working with fun people. But then I got
an email from a fraternity brother who said he had a sports
internship position available at his agency and thought it
would be perfect for me. I had always loved athletics and
thought it would be cool to work in a sports-related field. The
only problem was that my buddy lived on the West Coast and I
didn't want to move out there. So I ended up not taking the
sports internship he offered.
However, his email made me realize just how unfulfilling my
regular job was. I wanted to work in a field that I was
passionate about, not one that I didn't care one way or the
other for. After a bit of soul searching, I decided to look for
sports internships in my area. I called up my friend to ask if
he had any contacts in my area, but he was just starting out
himself, so he didn't really know anyone. Nevertheless, he
helped me out tremendously by sending me links to a bunch of
websites and job boards that contain lists of available sports
internships.
I made it a priority to spend my free time scouring these
job boards for any sports internships that sounded interesting.
Some of the job boards required that visitors pay a
registration or membership fee prior to viewing the sports
internships that were available. I decided to skip those for
the time being and check out the free sites alone. Ideally I
wanted to find a position with one of my hometown teams, such
as the Chicago Bears, White Sox, Cubs, Bulls, or Blackhawks,
but I was open to pretty much any opportunity that would help
me get my foot in the door to this exclusive industry.
Many of the sports internship websites I checked updated
their listings on a weekly basis. I was surprised at how many
sports internships were available in the area. Along with the
pro franchises I mentioned above, I saw sports internships for
many semi-pro and college teams as well. Any of those would be
perfect for me.
I am starting to send out my resume and am confident that I
will land one of these coveted sports internships sometime
soon. If I work hard, demonstrate my knowledge of and passion
for the game, and take the time to learn from others with more
experience, maybe my sports internship will even lead to a
full-time job and lifelong career. A job with my favorite team:
now that would definitely make me look forward to going to work
every day!
